What is Uveitis (general)
Iridocylitis
*intraocular inflammation
What are some causes of uveitis
- Autoimmune process
- Infections
- Toxins exposure
What is anterior uveitis
MC
1. Manifestation of systemic disease states
*inflammatory cells in aqueous humor deposit into the corneal epithelium
What are common disease states that leads to anterior uveitis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- behcet’s sarcoidosis
- Herpes simplex
- Herpes zoster
What are the signs of anterior uveitis
Acute UNILATERAL pain
1. Presence of adhesions between iris and anterior lens capsule (synechiae)
2. Small pupils, irregularly shaped, poorly reactive
3. Circumcorneal conjunctival injection
What needs to happen is someone presents with anterior uveitis
Urgent referral to ophthalmologist
1. Dark glasses
2. Dilation of pupils reduces pain
3. Topical glucocorticoids to reduce inflammation and scarring
4. If infectious
*antimicrobial therapy
What is the prognosis of anterior uveitis
- Should consider obtaining an MRI of the brain and spine
- With tx symptoms go away in a few days or weeks
- Relapses are common
What are some complications of anterior uveitis
- Cataracts
- Fluid in the retina
- Glaucoma
- Retinal detachment
- Vision loss
