A
Free living protozoan, amebic parasite that lives in polluted water

A
- Contact lens user
- Homemade saline solution
- Contaminated water, lakes

What are the signs of acanthamoeba keratitis
A
- Severe eye pain
- Rings are confined to corneal epithelium
*late = peri-neural, ring infiltrate in the corneal stroma

A
Emergent refferral for ophthalmology consultation
1. Corneal scrapings via Giemsa staining and culture

What is the treatment of AK
A
- Topical biguanides and corticosteroids
- Oral miltefosine
- Debridement

What is the treatment if there is sclera involvement
A
Systemic anti-inflammatory therapy necessary
