What is mastoiditis
A
Mastoid air cells connect with middle ear
1. Honeycomb like bone
2. Infective material accumulates and bone deteriorates

What is mastoiditis usually a complication of
A
Several weeks of inadequately treated or failure to treat AOM

What are the Rf of mastoiditis
A
- Recurrent AOM
- Immunocompromised
- Cholesteatoma
- Strep pneumoniae
- H flu
- S. Pyogenes

What are the signs of mastoiditis
A
- Obvious swelling over mastoid bone
- Cranial neuropathies
- Erythema
- Postaruricular pain
- Deep otalgia pain
- Tender over mastoid + cutaneous abscess

What is the treatment of mastoiditis
A
Consider immediate admission
1. IV ATB (cefazolin 0.5-1.5g every 6-8 hours) 2 weeks
2. Middle ear / mastoid drainage

What is the prognosis of mastoiditis
A
- Curable with treatment but difficult
- Failure of medical therapy requires mastoidectomy
