What is orbital cellulitis
A
Acute infection of structures around eye-extension via the sinuses
*MC ethmoid
*dangerous infection serious complications
*emergent referral

What are the common agents causing orbital cellulitis
A
- S. Pneumoniae
- Staph a
- H. Flu
- Beta-hemolytic strep

What are the signs of orbital cellulitis
A
Abrupt onset of fever
1. Proptosis (abnl protrusion of the eye)
2. Exophthalmos (paralysis of EOM)
3. Restriction of EOM
4. Swelling redness of lids
5. Purple eyelids
*history of sinusitis

How to diagnose orbital cellulitis
A
CT maybe MRI

What is the treatment of orbital cellulitis
A
Admit and IV ATB ASAP

What is the prognosis of orbital cellulitis
A
- Excellent if treated emergently
*abscess formation may require surgical drainage
