Inflammation of the rental fibers of the optic nerve (CN II) due to a demyelinating disease

A
- Multiple sclerosis
- Meds
- Autoimmune

What are the signs of optic neuritis
A
Loss of central vision over a few days
1. Contracted field
2. Enlarged blind spots
3. Pain with eye movement
4. Unilateral
5. Loss of color

What will be shown on PE
A
Fundus
1. Exudates
2. Flame shaped hemorrhages

What is the treatment of optic neuritis
A
- Methylprednisolone
- Prednisolone

What is the prognosis of optic neuritis
A
First episode of optic neuritis
*multiple sclerosis will develop in 50% of those patients within 15 years of it
