Non Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy Flashcards
1
Q
What is non Proliferative DR
A
- Retinal vessels become dilated
*develop micro aneurysms - Small reinstall hemorrhages, cotton wool spots, hard exudates
2
Q
What happens early on in non Proliferative DR
A
- Visual changes minimal or resolves after a few days
*as it progresses retinal edema occurs
*if it involves macular, visual acuity is affected = legal blindness
3
Q
What is seen during mild non Proliferative DR
A
- Miscroaneurysms
*early visible change in retinopathy during exam
*scattered red spots in the retina where tiny weakened blood vessels have ballooned out
4
Q
What is seen during moderate non Proliferative DR
A
- Blood vessels are blocked will begin to lead to edema
5
Q
What is seen during severe non Proliferative DR
A
Vessels are blocked, retina not getting blood supply
1. Hemorrhages
*bleeding occurs from damaged blood vessels leading to retinal layers
*can easily progress to proliferative retinopathy
6
Q
Is vision affected during severe non proliferative DR
A
- No unless the hemorrhages occurs in or neat the macula
*leaking blood can blur vision, makes the macula swell
