What is a subconjunctival hemorrhage

A

Spontaneous rupture of small vessels between episclera and conjunctiva

What causes a subconjunctival hemorrhage?

A
  1. Minor trauma
  2. Vigorous coughing
  3. Lifting
  4. Sneezing
  5. Vomiting
    *may be a sign to an underlying bleeding disorder

What are the signs of a subconjunctival hemorrhage

A
  1. Asymptomatic
  2. Prominent red eye or a dark maroon blood visible underneath conjunctiva
  3. Homogenous, sharply demarcated red area covering part of the sclera
  4. Pupils not affected

What is the treatment of a subconjunctival hemorrhage/

A

A lot of reassurance
1. Redness may continue to spread over 48 hrs
*will turn yellow and then disappear
*may take up to 10-14 days
2. Resolves without tx

What are the red flags of conjunctivitis

A
  1. Reduced visual acuity
  2. Ciliary flush
  3. Photophobia
  4. Severe FB sensation
  5. Corneal opacity
  6. Fixed pupil
