Is a consequence of recurrent AOM or unsealed TM perf
1. Long term damage due to infection, inflammation

What bacteria causes chronic otitis media
A
- P. Aeruginosa
- Proteus species
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Mixed anaerobic species

What is the clinical hallmark of chronic otitis media
A
Purulent aural discharge
1. Severe retraction or perforation of TM
2. Presence of a Cholesteatoma (abnl collection of skin cells deep inside your ear)

What are the signs of chronic OM
A
- Chronic drainage
- Persistent sense of fullness
- Conductive hearing loss
- Balance issues
- Facial weakness

What is the treatment of chronic OM
A
- Regular removal of infected discharge
- Regular use of earplugs
- ENT referral
*tympanic membrane repair
*mastoidectomy
*myringotomy tubes

What is the ATB treatment of chronic otitis media
A
Topical
1. Ofloxacin
2. Cipro with dexamethasone
PO
1. Cipro 500mg BID for 1-6 weeks
