Urinary System Anatomy Flashcards
What does the urinary system do
Eliminates waste products from the body and maintains fluid/salt balance.
Urinary system is often called the
Excretory system
The urinary system is composed of
Two kidneys
Two ureters
One urinary bladder
One urethra
What are the functions of the Kidneys
Secreting urine
Regulate fluids and electrolytes
Renin production
Renin is a
Vasoconstrictor
Where are the kidneys located
The upper posterior abdomen, retroperitoneal, and in contact with the posterior abdominal wall
The kidney looks like
Bean shaped bodies with convex lateral borders and concave medial borders
Kidneys extend from approximately
T12 to L3 on either side of the spine
The top of the kidney is more
Posterior than the inferior aspect
Kidneys are divided into upper and lower poles and measure approximately
4 1/2 inches long, 2 to 3 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches thick
The right kidney is
Slightly lower than the left
The left kidney is
Slightly longer and narrower
The renal capsule is
The outer covering of the kidney
Renal cortex is
The outer layer of renal tissue
Renal medulla is
The inner layer of renal tissue
The renal medulla is composed of
8 to 15 cone-shaped segments of collecting tubules
Renal pyramids are
The collecting tubules
Renal columns are
The extensions of the cortex between the renal pyramids
Nephron is
The essential microscope component of the kidney
The collecting ducts
Converge to form a central tubule within the pyramid. It opens at the renal papilla and drains into the minor calyx
Calyces are
The cup-shaped stems that enclose one or more papilla, are in the center of each kidney that receives the urine from collecting ducts
Minor calyces
Unite to form the major calyces
