Urban models Flashcards
Has rings of zones in a perfect circle
- concentric zone model
- geographer : Burgess
-1= CBD
2= zone of transition
3= zone of independant workers home
4 = Middle class
5= commuters zone / suburban rings
Concerntric zone model
based off of 1920 Chicago study. Suggested that immigrants livened in inner zones, which causes residents to move father out. A weakness is that it does not allow for change in the city or physical barrier. As city grows, inner rings affect the outer ones
The city is in the middle. But the rings are not equal. Zones 2,3,and 5 are not rings they are sticking out. Rectangular shaped
- Sector model
-Geograpgher : Hoyt
1= CBD
2= transportaion and industry
3= low-class residential
4= middle class residental
5= high-class residentail
Sector model
developed to adress weakness of concentric zone model. Hoyt said that growth creaed a pie-shaped urban structure. Low rent area could extend from the CBD to the outer edge. the sectors were developed along trasportation routes.
the model that looks like a plane 4 and 3 are very big. there are tiny little boxes which is 8 and 9 on the outside of it.
- multiple nuclei model
- geograpgher : Harris and Ullman
1= CBD
2= wholesale light manufacturing
3= low calss resedental
4= medium calss residental
5= high calss resedental
6= heavy mnaufacturing
7= outlying business district
8= residetial subrab
9= industrial subrub
multiple nuclei model
created because ppl though CBD was losing its dominance. CBD no longer the nucleus of the city. Reflects decentralization and nucleation of urban factores. the nuceli are disconnected and do not rely on each other.
is a big cricel with one in the middle, which is 2 big rectanguler box. the 2 is the other whole part of the circle. the 5 is the ring of the circle. some little boxes on the outside
- Galactic/peripheral model
geogrpaghr: created by Harris after the multiple nucleic model
1= CBD
2= surban residental area
3= shopping mall
4= industrial district
5= office park
6= service center
7= airport complex
8= combined emplyment and shopping center.
Galactic/peripheral model
kinda like the multiple nucli model but surronded bylarge suburban residential and business areas with a highway. outer areas do not have the same issues as inner cities. around the beltway are nodes of consumer and business services called edge cities.
looks like a blob
- urban realms model
gerogrpagher : Vance - the pentagon is the CBD
around the CBD are big surburbdas and edge cities
urban realms model
self suffienct subruban sectors. that focus on their independentat CBD
the one that has a spine with a tiny bis in the middle but a big circle
latin America model
- geogrpaher : Griffin ford
- CBD in the middle
- with commeral anc industrial spine
- near the commerical is where the higer class lives. middle class on the outsdie of the higher class. inside of cirale in transitial area witht he pooretn people living on the outskirts of the city.
latin America model
the most desiablr housing is near the CB. the wealthy live near the CBD to get better infraturcture . with poverty and shanty town on the outside ring. ther is a transtion zone between the CBD and the shanytowns.
circle but the CBD is different in 3 ways. one with boxed, one with ways lines, and one with werid lines
- African city model
- geograpghery de Bligy
the CBD is in the middle the boxed one is the colonial CBD, the wavy lined one is the traditional CBD, and the weridly shped one is the Market zone. the 3 think lines are the 3 major roads. on the outside of the CBD is ethnic and mized neighborhoods. and on the outside of that is tribes and villages. with no infastructure or satilite.
is a pizza shape
- southeast asian model
- geopgrapgher : McGee
-semi cirlce is the port zone . on top is mized land use and to the right is gov zone. on top is middle class, and to the right is the high class. the the next rint in squatteras and subrabus still to the right is high class. then the next and last rign is the market garbdeing zone. with an new industrial estate.
southeast asian model
centred around the port. then more chinese immigrants caem and created commerical zones which are areas used of commercial business and some manufacturing.
