Upper Extremity: Shoulder Region Flashcards
Scapulohumeral (intrinsic shoulder) muscles function
- Function directly on glenohumeral joint
Scapulohumeral (intrinsic shoulder) muscles
- Deltoid
- Teres major
- Supraspinatus
- Infraspinatus
- Teres minor
- Subscapularis
- Coracobrachialis can be part of this group
Rotator cuff muscles
- Supraspinatus
- Infraspinatus
- Teres minor
- Subscapularis
Deltoid
- Forms the round contour of the shoulder
- Named based on shape (Greek Δ)
- 3 separate fiber groups that can act separately
Deltoid proximal attachment
- Lateral 1/3 of clavicle
- Acromion and spine of the scapula
Deltoid distal attachment
- Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
Deltoid innervation
- Axillary nerve (C5,6)
Deltoid function (shoulder joint)
- Flexion and medial rotation
- Extension and lateral rotation
- Abduction (after 15⁰)
Rotator cuff muscles (SITS muscles)
- Form a musculotendinous cuff around the glenohumeral joint
- Important stabilizers of the GH joint
- Reinforce joint capsule
- Help keep the humeral head approximated to the glenoid fossa
Supraspinatus proximal attachment
- Supraspinous fossa of scapula
Supraspinatus distal attachment
- Greater tubercle of humerus
Supraspinatus innervation
- Suprascapular nerve (C5,6)
Supraspinatus function
- Ontiates/assists with arm abduction
- GH stabilizer
Infraspinatus proximal attachment
- Infraspinous fossa of scapula
Infraspinatus distal attachment
- Greater tubercle of humerus
Infraspinatus innervation
- Suprascapular nerve (C5,6)
Infraspinatus function
- Lateral rotator of arm
- GH stabilizer
Teres minor proximal attachment
- Posterior surface of inferior angle
Teres minor distal attachment
- Greater tubercle of humerus
Teres minor innervation
- Axillary nerve (C5,6)
Teres minor function
- Lateral rotator of arm
- GH stabilizer
Subscapularis proximal attachment
- Subscapular fossa
Subscapularis distal attachment
- Lesser tubercle of humerus
Subscapularis innervation
- Upper and lower subscapular nerve (C5-7)
