Cotton Kingdom
Reference to the cotton-growing south which used primarily slave labor to maintain revenue and would trade the raw crop with Europe, hoping that this leverage with the nation would gain support in the Civil War against the North.
Draft Riots
When congress passed a law requiring men to enlist in the army to fight for the Civil War, people of New York (specifically) were not willing to cooperate resulting in protests.
“Conquered Provinces”
Republican attitude toward southern states that had been in rebellion and were regained after the war.
“Personal Liberty Laws”
Laws passed in northern states to conquer requirements of fugitive slave law including right to jury trials and forbidding state authorities from cooperating in their capture and return
Peculiar Institution
was a euphemism for slavery in the south, a way to justify is use. “Our peculiar institution”
Sharecropping
Traded part of their crop for right to work someone else’s land. Kept newly freed blacks in debt.
Freedman’s Bureau
1865: Help former slaves integrate into society. Find food, housing, employment and developed public institutions.
“Higher Law”
Senator William Seward’s doctrine that slavery should be excluded from the territories as a contrary to a divine moral law standing above even the Constitution
Greenbacks
Printed money (initially temporary) to pay off depts during war leading to inflation. North had little issues with debt, South had inflation extremes and much debt.
“Radical” Regimes
Southerners had reorganized their governments to be republican and were granted their rights again
10 Percent Plan
Abraham Lincoln proposed 10% of Southern electorate accept emancipation, swear allegiance to union and apply for readmission. Could not have former leadership association w/confederates
