American Temperance Society

Millerites
The Millerites were the followers of the teachings of William Miller who shared his belief in the coming Second Advent of Jesus Christ in roughly the year.
Liberty Party
First anti-slavery party, attempted to gain political power for abolitionist.
Free Soil Party
Political party that appealed primarily to northern fears about the expansion of slavery. Opposed the extension of slavery into the western territories.
Shakers
United society of believers, sexual equality, communal ownership and strict celibacy. Created by Mother Ann Lee
American Anti-Slavery Society
Abolitionist party founded by William Loyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan. Created pamphlets, newspapers, orators to spread message. Many died in the violence of lynches.
Owenites
Utopian society created by Robert Owen, , cooperative movement. New Harmony community, short lived.
“Fire Eaters”
Pro-Slavery politicians who supported the South becoming its own nation. Transformed into Confederate States of Americans
Mulattos
Refer to a person who is part Black and part White, or of mixed ancestry

“Conscience” Whigs
A faction of the Whig Party in MA noted for moral opposition of Slavery
Mormons
Founded by Joseph Smith religious group that emphasized moderation, saving, hard work, and risk-taking, polygamy

Movement limiting the influence of Immigrant religion and culture in politics, a form of nativism.
