Types of Joint movement Flashcards
3 general types of movement
Gliding
Angular
Circular
Gliding movements
Most simple
Occur in-plane joints between two flat or nearly flight surfaces
Angular movements
knee/elbow movement changing the angle between two parts
Flexion and Extension
Flexion
bending movement that decreases the angle of the joint
Extension
Straightening movement that increases angel of the joint
Hyperextension
Extension fo joint beyond 180 degrees
Plantar flexion
Pointing the toes
Dorsiflexion
Walking on heels
Abduction
movement away from midline
Adduction
movement toward midline
Rotation
turning of structure around its long axis
Head hsake no
Pronation
laying face down (forearm)
Supination
Laying face up (forearM)
Circumduction
Combo of flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction. Occurs at freely movable joints, such as the shoulder.
Elevation
Moves a structure superiorly
Depression
Moves a structure inferiorly
Protraction
Glading motion that moves a structure aneriorly
Retraction
gliding motion that moves a structure in a posterior direction
Lateral excursion
Moving the mandible to the right or left of the midline
MEdial excursion
Returns mandible to the midline
Opposition
Movement unique to the thumb;
Reposition
returns thumb to the neutral position
Inversion
turns the ankle so that the plantar surface of the foot face medially
Active range of motion
A movement that can be accomplished by muscles
Passive range of motion
a movement that can be accomplished by an outside force - eg therapist or doctor moving your body part
Dislocation
The articulating surface of bones are moved out of proper alignment
Sprain
Ligament damage
