Functional organization of nervous tissue Flashcards
4 components of the nervous system
Brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory receptors
5 functions of the nervous system
1) maintain homeostasis
2) Receive sensory input
3) Integrate information
4) control muscles and glands
5) establish and maintain mental activity
2 major divisions of the nervous system
CNS - central nervous system
PNS - Peripheral nervous system
Componenets of the CNS
Brain and spinal cord
Components of the PNS
All nervous tissue outside the CNS
Linkes CNS with various parts of the body
Nerve
A bundle of many axons that connects the CNS to sensory receptors, muscles, and glands
Cranial nerves - origination and # of pairs
Brain
12 pairs
Spinal nerves - origination and # of pairs
Spinal. cord
31
Ganglion nerves
A collection of neuron cell bodies located outside the CNS
Plexus
an extensive network of axons located outside the CNS
2 subdivisions of PNS
sensory division (afferent/ toward CNS) motor division (efferent/ away from CNS)
What does the sensory division do?
transmits electrical signals, called action potentials, from sensory receptors in the body to CNS
What does the motor divsion do?
Transmits action potentials from the CNS to effector organs, such as muscles and glands
2 subdivisions of motor division
Somatic nervous system - voluntary
Autonomic nervous system - involuntary
Synapse
The junction of a neuron with another cell
