Cranial nerves Flashcards
3 functions of a cranial nerve (may have at least one or more of these functions)
Sensory
Somatic motor
Parasympathetic
Sensory functions
Special senses // vision, touch, pain
Somatic motor functions
control of skeletal muscles through motor neurons, proprioceptive sensory fibers
Proprioception
The awareness of the position fo your various body parts
Parasympathetic functions
Regulations of glands, smooth muscles, and cardiac muscle
Oculomotor nerve (III)
four/6 musscles that move eyebal and eylid.
Trochlear nerve
somatic motor nerve that innervates 1/6 eye muscles
Trigeminal nerve
motor innervation to muscles of mastication, middel ear, palatine, and throat
Allows you to chew without biting your tongue or cheek
Involved in sensory cutaneous innervation fo the head
Pain in headaches
Abducens nerve (VI)
somatic motor nerve,
1/6 eyeball nerves
Facial nerve (VII)
somoatic, sensory, and parasympathetic
Controls muscles of facial expression
Sense of taste
Vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII)
sesnory only
hearing and balance
Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
somatic, sensory, and parasympathetic
Taste middle ear pharynx
Vagus nerve (X)
somatic, motor, sensory, and parasympathetic
Muscles of soft palate, pharynx, and larynx
Accessory nerve (XI)
somatic motor
Sternocleidomastorid adn trapezius muscles
Hypoglossal nerve (XII)
somatic motor nerve
tongue muscles
thyrohyoid and genoiohyoid muscles
