Bone Anatomy Flashcards
Long bones
longer than they are wide
Upper and lower limbs
Flat bones
Thin, flattened shape and are usually curved
Ex: skull bones, ribs, breastbone, shoulder blades
Short bones
Round or cube-shaped
Ex: write bones (carpal bones(, ankle bones (tarsal bones)
Irregular bones
Don’t readily fit into other categories
vertebrae and facial bones
Diaphysis
The shaft of the bone
Epiphysis
Part of the bone that develops from a center of ossification distinct from teeh diaphysis
Epiphyseal plate
GRowth plate
BEtween epiphysis and diaphysis. Growth occurs here
Epiphyseal line
Where bone stops growing and is ossified
Medullary cavity
A hallow center in long bone that is filled with marrow
Red marrow
Site of blood cell formation
Yellow Marrow
Adipose tissue.
Completely replaces red marrow in long bones of limbs except for some red marrow in the proximal part of the arm and thighbones.
Periosteum
Connective tissue membrane covering the outer surface of a bone
Layers of Periosteum (2)
The outer - fibrous layer of dense irregular collagenous connective tissue; contains blood vessels and nerves
inner layer - a single layer of bone cells
Perforating fibers
Sharpy fibers - bundles of collagen fibers of tendons or ligaments that penetrate the periosteum.
Job - strengthen the attachment of tendons or ligaments.
Sinuses
air-filled spaces in some flat and irregular bones. Lined by mucous membranes
