- fist stage or learning
- used by novice
- movements slow and uncoordinated as performer has to think before taking action
- motor programmes are not yet developed
- performer uses trial and error
- example= novice hockey player working out actions of the pass

- motor progrmmes developed
- performance is smoother
- has to practice lots
- may still use feedback, can now be internal
- compare current level of performance to top level performer
- smoother and more coordinated

- fluent actions, effecient
- automatically undertaken
- performer can concentrate on fine details
