what is an open skill
skill performed in an unpredictable environment
- things performer have to think about when playing the sport

- performer can repeat actions consistently

what is a gross skill
skill that uses large muscle groups
- shoulder muscles to initiate a rugby tackle together with the leg muscles to drive the opponent to the ground
- large muscles of quadriceps in tackle will have a large number of fibres
what is a fine skill
skill that uses smaller muscle groups
- control
- returning shot in table tennis
- small muscles can be used for fine motor control such as the muscles used to control movements of the eyes and of the fingers

when performer controls the start and speed of the skill
- taking a penalty
what is an externally paced skill
performer has no control over the start and speed of the skill
-sailing; react to the speed of wind and flow of current when performing a maneuver

skill that has clear beginning and end
- tennis serve
what is a continuous skill
has no clear beginning and end and often the end of one part or sub-routine of the skill is the start of the next part
- cycling, actions of peddling repeatedly continuously until task is completed

skill that contains several discrete skills in order to make more a more integrated movement

skill that requires few decisions when being performed

skill that requires decision making using lots of information when performed
- dribble in hockey because player has to take into account the position of other players, attackers and defenders as well as concentrating on the ball and control on the stick
