what is competitive state
- anxiety experienced at specific time during competitive situation
- situation dependant
- temporary rush of anxiety
- caused by threatening circumstances
- cognitive or somatic or both
what does high trait anxiety mean
performer is more likely to have higher state anxiety
what are somatic symptoms
- physiological responses
- muscular tension
- shaking
- pacing
- poor co-ordination
- sweating
- increased HR

- results allow easy comparison
disadvantages:
- inaccurate & untruthful answers, people give socially acceptable answers
- misinterpretation of questions, lack of understanding
- answers may depend on mood
- questions may be inappropriate and lead to biased answers
- responses can be influenced by the time taken to complete the questions- rushing

advantages:
- true to life
- during a real game
disadvantages:
- behaviour change when watched, pressure
- subjective
- know performer
- need more than one observer

advantages:
- objective
- specific
- factual
- can be measured in real life situations
disadvantages:
- causes stress when measured
- need training to use equipment
- expensive equipment
- device may restrict performance

- trait is anxiety in most situations, always nervous before a game
- state is anxiety specific to the situation and can change, becoming high at specific times
- if you have the trait, you are more likely to experience the state
- cognitive anxiety = psychological and includes irrational thinking and loss of concentration
- somatic anxiety = psychological and includes muscular tension
