-migration of the lower class into cities= looking for work in factories led to less space for sport
- lack of income= low wages meant lack of income available for sport
- a lack of public provisions= no access to private facilities
- poor health= pillution, lack of hygiene, less energy to play
- loss of rights= restrictions placed on mob games and blood sports
