The hormonal, neural and chemical regulation of responses during physical activity Flashcards
define the sympathetic nervous system?
a part of the automatic nervous system that speeds up heart rate
define the parasympathetic nervous system?
a part of the autonomic nervous system that decreases heart rate
What is the medulla oblongata?
the location of the cardiac control centre which coordinates the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
Chemoreceptors location?
cartoid arteries and aortic arch
Function of chemoreceptors?
detect an increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the blood and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system
Function of baroreceptors?
Contain nerve endings that respond to stretching of the arterial wall caused by changes in blood pressure, increase above their set point causes stimulation of parasympathetic nervous system to lower heart rate. Their set point increases at the start of exercise.
location of proprioreceptors?
muscles, tendons and joints
Proprioreceptor function?
provide information about movement and body position, increase in movement causes an increase in heart rate
Methods of increases heart rate
Receptors send an impulse to the medulla which sends an impulse through the sympathetic nervous system to the SA node to increase heart rate
Hormonal control function
Release of adrenaline by the sympathetic nerve and cardiac nerve stimulates the SA node, so speed and force of contraction increase.
