- Scientific and technological advances
- Societies became rich
- Growth of cities
- More leisure time
- Communications technology increased and allowed sports to become globalised
- Stress due to wars and terrorism took its toll on people’s health
Class in 20th century
- Working class and middle class competed side by side
- Working men and women had less time for sport
Gender in 20th century
-Crowds at matches were predominantly male with only few middle class women watching. —Working class women were excluded from professional sport by the constraints of time and money

-The crowds were mainly well behaved and this lead to the view that sport was a class symbol. Unemployed workers weren't well represented due to the cost of spectating. As unemployment rocketed, professional sport suffered

-The education act of 1944 all schools had to teach sport for mental and physical developments

-Increased leisure time and money allowed men to play and watch sport.

-Transport became much more available to everyone. This increases the number of people able to travel abroad to watch sport.
What is an amateur
A person who competed in sport but doesn’t receive monetary rewards
What is a professional?
Professional
A sports person who competes in sport and earns money for it
21st century class system
- The class system is less pronounced but there are still divisions. Social mobility can be achieved through sport and can allow an escape from poverty.
- Participation is higher in people from higher socio-economic backgrounds
21st century gender
- There are still more men participating than women.
- Some people say that being good af sport is unfemenine and certain activities are linked to either men or women.
- Increased female sports presenters and role models and less discrimination eg. In golf
21st century law and order
- The law has been used to litigate against officials and referees.
- The law has also been used to prevent sport deviance and gambling
- Laws prevent discrimination
- eg. Golf clubs are no longer able to discriminate against female members
21st century education
- Physical Education is a requirement in all levels of school up to the age of 16
- Students can do a GCSE or A level in PE
21st century time and money
Most people are much better off and have a greater amount of free time
- The recession has affected the participation in sports as people have less disposable income
- Gym membership is more affordable

- Freedom of movement has allowed foreign players to move to clubs and spectators to travel more easily
