What affect does smoking have on cilia?

A
  • attracts the cilia (burns them)
  • deform or destroys the cilia so they are no longer able to do their job.
    The cilia are used as protection from chemicals to the lungs
  • the chemicals from smoking enter the lungs.

What affect does smoking have on the alveoli?

A
  • smoke breaks the thin walls of the alveoli
  • the alveoli can burst or swell
  • decreases efficiency of diffusion
  • reduces surface area to volume ratio
  • their walls break down and join together. increases risk of COPD

A
  • The haemoglobin in red blood cells picks up carbon monoxide a lot easier than oxygen.
  • causes increase lactic acid.
  • reduces oxygen- carrying capacity of the blood which increases breathlessness.
