THE CONDUCTION SYSTEM Flashcards
What does SAAVHISP stand for?
SA - Sino atrial node
AV - Atrio ventricular node
HIS - Bundle of his
P - Purkinje fibres
Where does cardiac impulses originate from?
sino atrial node
What is the name for the Sino atrial nerve?
the pacemaker
What is cardiac systole?
the phase of the heart beat when the heart contracts to pump blood
what is diastole?
the phase of the heart beat when the heart relaxes to fill with blood
What does the word conduction mean?
The process by which heat or electricity is directly transmitted through the material of a substance when there is a difference of temperature or of electrical potential between adjoining regions, without movement of the material.
What is the cardiac conduction system?
The cardiac conduction system is a collection of nodes and specialised conduction cells that initiate and co-ordinate contraction of the heart muscle.
What is the definition of myogenic?
the capacity of the heart to generate its own impulses
What Is the AVN (atrioventricular node)
This node relays the impulse between upper and lower sections of the heart
What is the bundle of HIS?
A collection of muscle cells that transmit electrical impulses from the AVN via the bundle branches to the purkinje fibres
What are bundle branches?
Carries an electrical impulse from the Bundle of His to the purkinje fibres
What are purkinje fibres?
Muscle fibres that conduct impulses in the walls of the ventricles
whats the order that the impulse travels in
SAN Atrial systole AVN Bundle of His Bundle branches Purkinge fibres Ventricular systole
