ROLE OG PNF Flashcards

1
Q

Explain function of golgi tendon organs (GTOs)

A
  • Detect tension in muscle (created during isometric contraction phase).
  • Sends inhibitory signals to CNS to relax antagonist muscle (autogenic inhibition).
  • Delays stretch reflex.
  • Allows for greater range of movement.

Q

Explain function of muscle spindles (stretch receptors)

A
  • Provide info to CNS when muscle is contracting.
  • Create stretch reflex to contract antagonist.
  • Prevent overstretching.

Q

The physiology- name the 7 steps

A
  1. When stretch occurs, muscle spindles detect changes in muscle (fibres).
  2. Causes stretch reflex (proprioceptor) to be activated.
  3. Although stretch reflex designed to prevent overstretching.
  4. Aim of PNF is to override stretch reflex so it does not occur.
  5. Golgi Tendon organs (GTOs) activated, which detect overstretching of muscles.
  6. They can cause muscles to relax + lengthen- called autogenic inhibition.
  7. In turn, this allows greater range of movement than initial stretch (greater range of movement in training session).
