Synthetic Hormones Flashcards
What are synthetic hormones?
Synthetic hormones are produced by either recombinant DNA or chemical manufacturing that is extracted and given to patients. They can treat disorders such as diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism.
What is type 1 diabetes?
Is an autoimmune disease where T cells attack beta cells causing a lack of insulin.
What is type 2 diabetes?
Individuals can produce insulin, but cells do not respond to it by not absorbing it. The pancreas increases insulin production to control glucose levels, but overtime beta cells wear out and so insulin production reduces.
What is hyperthyroidism?
Occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroxine. It overstimulates cells causing the body’s metabolic rate to increase.
What hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism occurs when not enough thyroxine is produced which lowers the body’s metabolic rate.
