Relationship between the Hypothalamus and Pituitary Gland - Posterior Lobe Flashcards
what does the hypothalamus do
The hypothalamus monitors hormone levels. It manufactures hormones released by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland.
what does the posterior lobe do
The posterior lobe only stores hormones
describe how the posterior lobe releases hormones
These hormones (oxytocin + ADH) will be carried via a nerve cell to the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland to be stored. The neuron found in the hypothalamus will release a nerve impulse into the posterior lobe causing oxytocin or ADH to be released into the bloodstream.
draw a table to compare and contrast the anterior and posterior lobes of the pituitary gland
anterior lobe
1. chemical control - released via a chemical (releasing factor)
2. manufactures hormones
3. stores the hormones
4. hormones mad in the anterior lobe
posterior lobe
1. nervous control - released via a nerve impulse
2. does not manufacture hormones
3. stores the hormones
4. hormones mad in the hypothalamus
