Internal defences - Phagocytosis Flashcards
1
Q
What are 3 forms of internal responses?
A
- Phagocytosis
- Inflammation
- Fever
2
Q
What are leukocytes?
A
white blood cells
3
Q
What are the 2 types of leukocytes?
A
- Granulocytes
- Agranulocytes
4
Q
What are the 3 types of granulocytes?
A
- Neutrophils
- Basophils
- Eosinphils
5
Q
Describe how phagocytosis is an internal defence
A
- When tissue becomes infected monocytes leave the bloodstream and enter the tissue.
- Monocytes differentiate into macrophages looking to destroy pathogens or waiting for pathogens that come to them.
- Neutrophils are the first cells to move to tissue and destroy the pathogen by phagocytosis. They make up the pus that forms after an infection.
- Dendritic cells use this information about the ingested particles to assist with specific immunity.
6
Q
What are the 2 types of agranulocytes?
A
- Monocytes
- Lymphocytes
7
Q
What are neutrophils?
A
Kill and digest harmful bacteria and fungi.
8
Q
What are basophils?
A
Release histamines.
9
Q
What are eosinophils?
A
Fight bacteria, parasites and cause an allergic response.
10
Q
What are monocytes?
A
Can differentiate into phagocytes and clean up dead cells.
11
Q
What are lymphocytes?
A
Resposible for a specific immune response.
