Structure and Functions of the brain Flashcards
Cerebrum
The cerebrum initiates and coordinates movement. Enables speech, thinking and emotions
Corpus callosum
Connects the hemispheres of the brain to ensure they can communicate
Thalamus
The thalamus eceives and processes information from the senses before sending it to the cerebral cortex
Pons
Pons contains the expiratory centre and controls facial movements and sensory information
Cerebellum
The cerebellum is responsible for coordination and balance
Medulla Oblongata
The Medulla Oblongata contains the respiratory, vasomotor and cardiac centre
Spinal Cord
The spinal cord transmits nerve impulses to and from the brain and coordinates reflexes
Pituitary gland
The pituitary gland regulates growth, metabolism and reproduction through hormone production
hypothalamus
The hypothalamus maintain homeostasis
What does the cardiac centre in the medulla oblongata do?
Regulates the rate and force of the heartbeat.
What does the respiratory centre in the medulla oblongata do?
Controls the rate and depth of breathing.
What does the vasomotor centre in the medulla oblongata do?
Regulates the diameter of blood vessels.
