Receptors Flashcards
what is a receptor
A nerve or cells ending that detects change in the body’s internal and external environment
what are the five different receptors
- Thermorecpetor
- Osmoreceptor
- Chemoreceptor
- Touch
- Pain
what is a thermoreceptors stimulus
change in temperature
where can thermoreceptors be found
- skin
- hypothalamus
what is a thermoreceptor
A thermoreceptor will monitor the body’s core temperature in the hypothalamus, which detects the temperature of blood flowing through the brain.
what are a osmoreceptors stimuli
osmotic pressure
where can osmoreceptors be found
hypothalamus
what is an osmorepecetor
Osmoreceptors are sensitive to the osmotic pressures of body fluids. They can stimulate the hypothalamus so that the body’s water content is maintained within a very narrow limit
what are chemoreceptors stimuli
chemicals
where can chemoreceptors be found
- nose
- mouth
- blood vessels
what is a chemoreceptor
Chemoreceptors recognise changes in the concentration of oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen ions in the blood. They send nerve impulses to the respiratory centre in the medulla oblongata which controls the rate and depth of breathing.
what are touch receptors stimuli
anything that comes into contact with the skin
where can touch receptors be found
skin
what is a touch receptor
Is a receptor sensitive to touch. When a stimulus makes contact with our skin we can feel it, however, the sensation quickly disappears because touch receptors close the skin surface adapt.
what are pain receptors stimuli
- damage to the tissues
- heat
- chemicals
