Synovial joints Flashcards
Articular surface
smooth surface
hyaline cartilage
no blood vessels
Joint Cavity
encloses articular surface of bones
filled with synovial fluid
Joint Capsule
helps hold bones together while still allowing movement
two layers:
inner synovial
outer fibrous
fibrous capsule
continuous with periosteum
dense irregular connective tissue
synovial membrane
lines inside of joint capsule except at articular surface
thin and delicate
synovial fluid
complex mixture of polysaccharides, proteins, fats and cells, hyaluronic acid
slippery
supplies nutrients
Bursae
pockets of synovial membrane fluid that extend in from synovial membrane
found in areas of friction
articular disk
flat pad of fibrocartilage
Menisci
type of disk that only partially pans synovial cavity; leave partially opening
–wrist and knee
Tendon Sheaths
synovial sacs that that surround tendons as they pass near or by the bone
