Basic nervous system Flashcards
nerve
bundle of axons outside of brain and spinal cord
ganglion
collection of neuron cell bodies outside brain and spinal cord
plexus
extensive network of axons (nerves) and sometimes cell bodies outside CNS
Glial cells
supportive cells
functions of the nervous system (5)
- maintain homeostasis
- Receive sensory input
- Integrating information
- Control muscles and Glands
- Establish and maintain mental activity
CNS
receives info from body and sends info to body
“key decision maker”
made up of Brain and spinal cord
PNS
detects info around body and sends that info to the brain ; communicates info from brain to body
“messanger”
made up of nerves, ganglia and sensory receptors
Sensory Division of PNS
AFFERENT = towards
detects info from sensory receptors and sends them to the CNS
IE–sends message to brain if light in dark room, eye needs to constrict
Motor Division of PNS
Efferent=Away
Transmits signals from CNS to effector organ
IE–message to constrict eye in dark room with light
Somatic Motor division of PNS
voluntary
ie moving your skeletal muscles
single neuron system
Autonomic motor division of PNS
involuntary
ie contraction of heart and smooth muscle and certain glands
two neuron system
one in CNS extends to one in autonomic PNS
3 divisions of autonomic motor PNS
parasympathetic
sympathetic
enteric
parasympathetic PNS
regulates resting functions IE digesting food or emptying your bladder
sympathetic PNS
prepares body for physical activity–fight or flight
enteric PNS
plexus within wall of digestive tract
