hair cells function/hearing function Flashcards
hair cells inner row responsible for
hearing
hair cells outer row responsible for
keeping tension on the basilar membrane
hair bundle
sterocillia of inner hair row
tip link
attaches tip of each hair bundle through sterocilia to tip of next taller hair cell
when sterocillia bend they
open K+ channels
cochlear nerve fibers join the
vetibular nerve
vestibulocholear nerve path
transverse the internal acoustic meatus and enters the cranial cavity
volume/loudness
function of wave amplitude
pitch
function of wave frequency
timbre
resonance quality or overtone of sounds
sound attenuation reflex
tensor tympani muscle and stapieus medius muscle dampens sounds
hearing pathway
sound waves–>external auditory canal–> tympanic membrane vibrates–>auditory ossicles vibrate–>oval window–> scala vestibuli–>perilymph–> vestibular membrane–> vibration in endolympph of cochlea duct –> basilar membrane displaced detected by hair cells–> hair cells bend—> vibrations go out from scala tympani to round window
CNS hearing pathway through inferior colliculi
sensory axons from cochlear ganglion–>cochlear nucleus in brainstem–>infeiror colliculous–>thalamus–>auditory cortex
CNS hearing pathway through supeiror olivary nuclei
sensory axons from cochlear ganglion–> superiors olivary nuclei–> inferior colilcui —> back to inner ear or motor nuclei–>efferent fibers in middle ear
