Submergent And Emergent Coastline - COASTS Flashcards
Emergent coastlines example due to isostatic (rise/fall in land)
Raised beaches - kings cave
Submergent coast landforms due to eustatic (rise/fall in sea level due to volume of water )
- Rias - kings bridge estuary in Devon
- Fjords - Norway
- Dalmatian coasts - Croatia
Isostatic change meaning
Land moves in relative to the sea
(crustal material is forced down into the mantle changing the relative sea level.)
Eustatic subsidence meaning
Sea moves in relative to the land
(a rise or fall in water levels caused by a change in the volume of water.)
Formation of fjords
Glacial troughs ( U- shaped valleys ) are flooded due to rising sea levels.
Formation of Dalmatian coasts
Mountains run parallel/concordant to coast and submergence of this coastline produces long inlets with a can of parallel islands
Formation of Rias
A ria is a drowned river valley - a section of river valley flooded by the sea, making it much wider than would be expected based on the river flowing into it
Formation of raised beaches
Originally a beach or cliff created through rising sea level
