Lithology- COASTS Flashcards
What is lithology?
Geological structure of the rocks. (There are 5)
What are the 5 types of structure for lithology?
- Strata
- Bedding planes
- Faults
- Joints
- Dip
Strata
Layers of rock
Seen in Dorset coast
Bedding planes
Horizontal natural breaks in the strata. Caused by gap in time during periods of rock formation
Seen in Holderness
Faults
Stress of pressure causes fractures
Holderness
Joints
Vertical fractures caused either by contraction as sediments dry out, or by earth movements during uplift.
Dip
refers to the angle at which the rock strata lie ( horizontaltally, vertically, dipping towards the sea, or dipping inland)
Folds
Formed by pressure during tectonic activity which makes rocks buckle and crumple, for ex the Lulworth crumple
Lithology in a question
Lithology would be used as a factor of rate of retreat
Differential Erosion
Alternating strata in cliffs are due to varying rates of permeable and resistant rock which will form less prominent and weaker cliffs profile as they erode more easily.
