Changing patterns of power and Theories of Power - SUPERPOWERS Flashcards
Different types of polarity
Patterns of power change over time, there may be one, to or multiple superpowers extending their power globally.
Uni-polar world
Is dominated by one superpower e.g the British empire
Bi-polar world
IS where two superpowers with different ideologies compete for power e.g Cold War
Multi-polar world
Is complex and where many superpowers and emerging powers compete for powers in different regions
Wallerstein’s world system theory
The World Systems Theory identifies two different economic areas within the world - the core and the periphery. Core regions are economic powerhouses and therefore control most aspects of global trade such as trade agreements and trading currency. The core regions trade with those in the periphery who often provide labour and materials for the core nations.
Franks dependency theory
Frank argued that the developed nations kept the developing countries in a state of underdevelopment to profit off their economic weakness. In poorer countries, raw materials are sold at lower prices, and workers are forced to work for lower wages than in developed countries with higher living standards.
Rostow’s modernization theory
The Rostow Model, Rostow’s 5 Stages of Economic Growth, or Rostow’s Model of Economic Development, is a modernisation theory model depicting how countries move from an underdeveloped society to one that is more developed and modern.
