Hold The Line- Mappleton Holderness CS COASTs , includes hard engineering example Flashcards
1
Q
Population density
A
342
2
Q
What’s at risk
A
-village of Mappleton: 50 homes, 300 residents
-businesses such as Vauxhall garage, post office and petrol station
-farmland on either side of Mappleton is not protected and is seen as not valuable
-the coast os eroding up to 10cm a year and is one of the fastest eroding coastline in Europe
-the road B1242 is at risk of erosion
3
Q
What management did they use?
A
Hold the line
4
Q
What strategies did they put in place to protect the coast?
A
- 2 rock groynes and rock armour
-they were imported from Norway as they are resistant rock
-cost 2million
5
Q
What are the strengths?
A
- coastline no longer affected by coastal erosion due to management scheme
- rock armour protects the cliff to southern end and has been successful in restricting waves from attacking the base of cliffs
6
Q
What are the weaknesses?
A
- the coast is expensive
- area near south is effected more by erosion, beaches there have low sediment and low tide exposing sand and boulders high have been eroded from cliffs
7
Q
What are the opportunities?
A
- as a result of the coastal scheme no properties have been lost to sea
-the road B1242 remains safe from risk of erosion - construction of rock groynes has created a large, higher sandy beach for Mappleton
8
Q
What are the threats?
A
- A woman lost her farm to sea as a result of erosion
-agricultural land at risk
