What’s at risk?

A

-village of Mappleton: 50 homes, 300 residents
-businesses such as Vauxhall garage, post office and petrol station
-farmland on either side of Mappleton is not protected and is seen as not valuable
-the coast os eroding up to 10cm a year and is one of the fastest eroding coastline in Europe
-the road B1242 is at risk of erosion

What strategies did they put in place to protect the coast?

A
  • 2 rock groynes and rock armour
    -they were imported from Norway as they are resistant rock
    -cost 2million

  • coastline no longer affected by coastal erosion due to management scheme
  • rock armour protects the cliff to southern end and has been successful in restricting waves from attacking the base of cliffs

  • area near south is effected more by erosion, beaches there have low sediment and low tide exposing sand and boulders high have been eroded from cliffs

    -the road B1242 remains safe from risk of erosion
