Hazard management earthquakes- TECTONICS Flashcards
Preparation/Modify the vulnerability (Before the hazard)
Prediction and monitoring:
-Japan- tsunami prediction is 80/90% accurate, no sound tech in place to predict earthquakes
-Haiti- None in place
Community preparedness:
-Japan- earthquake drills yearly done in workplaces and schools. Emergency services especially trained for earthquake response methods.
-Haiti- lack of public awareness, shortage of trained health care workers
Mitigation/physical action to Modify the loss (economic, resources, homes)
Short and long term aid
-Japan- US military and international search and rescue teams.
-Haiti- many international teams sent. 16,000 UN troops sent to restore order.
Insurance
-Japan- Bank of Japan offered US dollars 183 billion to Japanese banks so they could keep operating (protecting country’s economy)
-Haiti- World Bank cancelled half of Haitis debt.
Strategies to control the hazard:
-Japan- 4,700 evacuated. Area and people which experienced meltdown had radiation levels checked.
-Haiti-US military took control of airport to speed up distribution on aid. Government was in cripples so loss of civil order
Recovery/Modify the event (present)
Protection:
-Japan- 75% of buildings constructed with earthquake proof buildings. Early warning system. Strict building regulations. Areas vulnerable have ten metre high walls.
-Haiti- None that is known. Long history of unstable governments.
Adaptation/response -changing behavior to deal with the event
Reduce impacts of hazards for future:
-Japan- 87% of buildings in Tokyo are earthquake proof, gas is immediately shut to prevent gas leaks and fires.
-Haiti-New settlements built away from risk areas. Buildings rebuilt to building codes.
