Starting the Engines Flashcards
What do we need to make sure of when starting the engines?
Parking brake set
Cover the brakes in case aircraft moves forward during start up
Make sure propeller area is clear
How many forms can the engine start up procedure take?
4:
Normal start up
Start up in cold weather operation
Start up with a hot or flooded engine
Start up with external power
What checklists go before and after the start up procedure?
BEFORE START
AFTER START
What does the BEFORE START CHECK LIST INCLUDE?

How do we press the primer?
between 3-6 seconds until we see positive fuel flow
To how many rpm do we reduce once we have pushed the starter until the engine starts and release it?
1200 rpm
What do we do to prevent starter damage?
limit starter cranking to 30 second periods
How many minutes of cooling period do we need to allow if the engine does not start at that time?
2 minutes
Do we engage the starter immediately after realizing it?
NO
What checklist do we read after?
AFTER START CHECKLIST
What about after this checklist, when we’ve been cleared?
we will begin the taxi
What do we check after starting the first engine?
oil pressure green within 30 seconds
ammeter charging
fuel flow in green
positive gyro pressure on the operative engine
Red ball is nor showing (indication of gyro pressure failure if it is still there)
What’s the start up in cold weather operation?
done in cold weather, engines are quite cold and could cause first explosions inside the cylinders
What does the instructor do before starting up, in the pre-flight inspection?
manually turn the propellers of each engine 3 times, so that any fluids in the engine are removed
What’s the Start up sequence in cold weather operation?
11 steps
