Gear Failure Flashcards
When will the red landing gear light illuminate?
hen the landing gear is in transition between the full up position and the down and locked position.
What do we do if continued illumination of the light oocurs?
Pilot should recycle the landing gear
When will the light also illuminate?
When the gear warning horn sounds
What’s the procedure to recycle the landing gear?
1
Gear lever: “RECYCLE and DOWN POSITION”
2
Gear warning lights and horn: “CHECK”
3
Check alternators and master switch are “ON” and check the ammeters.
4
Gear circuit breaker and gear pump: “IN”.
5
Navigation lights: “OFF” (The brightness of the landing lights can lead to the point of not being unable to see the gear warning lights).
6
Landing gear lights: “CHECK” (you can exchange the landing gear lights cause maybe one of them is burnt out)
If for any reason, we cannot extend the landing gear,
we can attempt to perform the manual procedure. In the PA-34 the manual gear extension consists of a gravity drop.
The procedure as described in the manual is as follows:
1
Reduce speed: below 85 KIAS.
2
Gear lever: “DOWN POSITION”
3
Pull the emergency gear extension knob (this should not be stowed again until the aircraft has been seen by maintenance).
4
Landing gear lights down and locked: “CHECK”.
5
Maximum speed: 129 KIAS.
NOTE
NOTE: We will have no indication that the gear is down and locked at this point. This is due to the extension being by gravity. To confirm that the gear is locked, we can perform a series of turns/slips with more force than normal.
GEAR UP LANDING:
What should we do once we realize we have an emegency?
communicate with ATC
so that they can prepare the runway and fire service for the landing.
If the problem is due to only one of the legs not being down or locked
the decision to land with two, one or none is up to the pilot in command
Before landing
you should have selected the runway and unlatched the doors.
An approach should be made with
power at a normal airspeed with the flaps up
Why are the flaps left UP¿
to reduce wing and flap damage.
Upon touchdown:
- Close the throttles
- Turn OFF the master and ignition switches
- move the fuel selector valve controls to OFF
- Contact to the surface should be made at a minimum airspeed
Once we have landed,
we will evacuate the aircraft
