What is Sport Psychology?
Sport Psychology is the study of how people think, feel and behave in sporting situations and the mental processes that govern how athletes behave in training and competition.
What is Psychological Skills Training?
PST is the interaction between sports and Psychology sport psychologists and athletes use specific tools to improve performance.
What are some Performance Enhancing mental skills?
Self-talk, Meditation, Concentration/Coping strategies.
What is Self-talk?
Involved an internal monologue urging the subject to succeed.
It can facilitate Relaxation and focus.
What is Imagery?
The idea that if an athlete can visualize themselves succeeding, it increases their chances of actually succeeding on game day.
What are Intrinsic factors?
Refers to goals that are more intangible and self-oriented, such as a desire to master a skill.
What are Extrinsic factors?
Refers to material rewards that athletes can strive to claim.
What’s a myth in this and why is it bad?
“Everyone needs a rousing pep-talk”
This myth is false. It is best recommended that athletes relaxation and quiet focus to help their performance before a game.
