who are professional athletes?
they are people who are paid to compete in a sport
who are amateur athletes?
they are people who play mainly for personal enjoyment/prestige.
they are not paid to compete full-time
they often rely on government support for part of their training
what is the difference between professional and amateur athletes?

what are semi-pro athletes?
its a blend of the two.
what is canada’s major sports granting agency?
Sport Canada.
it funds through the athlete assistance program.
to qualify, you have to be a top 16 athlete in the world to qualify
what are the challenges of amateur athletes?
they must train while having a job
they typically pay for their own coaching and travel.
they do not have lucrative endorsements.
what is sport-for-profit?
SFP, refers to organized sport where owners hire players to compete and then the owners market their athletes.
not for profit sport?
NFPS, refers to recreational, community and national-level sport where the primary objective is enjoyment and representing one’s country.
the olympics are an example of this.
what are the revenue streams of profit sport?
they are:
sale of rights to media coverage of an event
rights to manufacture products
sales of advertising on TV.
