Linear Motion (Principles 4/5) Flashcards
What is Biomechanical principle 4 & 5 called?
Principle 4: Impulse-Momentum Relationship
Principle 5: The direction in which movement usually occurs
What is the law for Principle 4 and what does it mean?
“The greater the applied impulse, the greater the increase in velocity.”
Essentially it’s saying that the more force applied over a longer period of time on an object, the greater the increase in velocity (or acceleration) will occur.
Example of Principle 4 being used?
A jump serve in volleyball.
When a person goes to jump serve, they throw the ball into the air, run forwards and spike the ball mid air with a follow-through.
The running and jumping allows for more Impulse and it places it on the ball allowing it to rapidly increase in velocity and acceleration.
What is momentum equal to?
Momentum is equal to mass * velocity.
P=mv
What is the law for principle 5 and what does it mean?
“Movement usually occurs in the direction opposite that of the applied force.”
It’s essentially a parallel to Newton’s third law where every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction.
Example of where Principle 5 can be observed?
It can be seen in olympic swimmers when they push off. They often push off the wall using their feet, which propels them forwards, thus demonstrating the 5th principle and Third Law of Motion.
