What’s Cognitive Development?

A

Cognitive Development refers to a person’s gradual change information processing, conceptual ability, perceptual skill, language learning, and other aspects of brain development—the emergence of the ability to think and understand.

Who is Jean Piaget?

A

He’s a Swiss psychologist, developmental theorist, and philosopher.

He came up with the ‘Piaget theory of Cognitive Development’.

A

1) Sensorimotor stage
2) Pre-operational stage
3) Concrete Operational stage

What’s the sensorimotor stage?

A

Infancy (Birth-2 years of age).

Children learn about the world through their senses and motor movement.

Main goal at this age is establishing the idea of object permanence (belief that an object out of site doesn’t mean it’s not real).

Latter part of this stage is language development.

What’s the Pre-Operational stage?

A

Early childhood (2-7).

Children demonstrate intelligence through usage of symbols.

Children at this stage are typically egocentric.

Characterized by significant growth of memory and imagination as well.

What is the concrete operational stage?

A

Early Adolescence (7-11).

Children begin to solve problems in a logical fashion.

Begin to understand concept of ‘conservation’ (addition, subtraction and that stuff).

They begin to be empathetic in this stage.

They become better at solving problems in their head.

A

Early adulthood (11-15).

Children begin to demonstrate intelligence of through their ability to solve ABSTRACT problems.

They often return to a more Egocentric behaviour during this stage.
