Physical Growth and Dev. Flashcards
L9.2
What’s Physical growth/development?
Not a trick question
Correlates to the body’s development of bones/muscles e.t.c.
Typically occurs in “Growth Spurts”.
Varies between Males and Females.
What’s PHV?
Peak-
Peak Height Velocity (PHV) is the maximum rate of growth in height that occurs during a growth spurt.
Girls reach their peak height velocity of an 8 cm increase per year at around age 12. On the other hand, boys typically reach their peak height velocity of a 10 cm increase per year at around age 14.
What are critical periods?
Critical periods are certain periods of growth and development.
For example, during the transition from childhood to puberty (around the beginning of the teens years), hormonal changes make our bones more susceptible to growing and becoming denser. This is, therefore, a critical period of human growth and development.
What are the two growth sequences?
Cephalocaudal sequence: Growth first in the head followed by the trunk and the extremities.
Proximodistal sequence: Body movements that originate close to the center of the body develop earlier than those that originate farther away from the center.
What are some factors that affect physical growth and development?
Hormonal/Glandular activity.
Heredity
Nutrition/Diet
Phys. Activity
Sociocultural factors
What’s the Endocrine system?
System that produces/releases hormones that regulate the metabolism.
Composed of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, the ovaries (in females), and the testes (in males).
Different hormones come in at DIFFERENT STAGES of development (you won’t see sex hormones in action until Puberty unless you have a rare Pituitary gland disorder that makes them secrete earlier).
What’s Heredity?
Transmission of Genetic Characteristics from Father to Son per se.
How many minutes of activity does CSEP advise Adolescents should get?
Kids Aged 12-17 should strive to get an hour of Moderate-Vigorous exercise per week.
What are some Sociocultural factors that can affect participation of Sports/Physical activity?
Financial struggles, Lack of access, Racial/Religious discrimination.
