Muscle Fibre types Flashcards
7.4
What are the two Muscle fibre types?
Slow Twitch: Dark Red in colour. Maintains a lower level of tension for long durations.
Fast Twitch: More Pale in colour. Tense are relaxes quickly. Can generate large amounts of tension with low endurance levels.
What’s a Type I muscle fibre?
Type I (Slow Oxidative], generate energy slowly. They are more fatigue resistant and primarily depend on the Aerobic processes.
What are Type IIA Fibres?
These fibres are Fast-oxidative glycolytic type of fibre. They are ‘hybrids’ in the sense that they can utilize both the Aerobic and Anaerobic systems.
They have faster contractions but are less fatigue resistant than Type 1 Fibres.
What are Type IIB Fibres?
Type IIB (Fast Glycolytic) Fibres, store large amounts of Glycogen and are able to quickly contract without Oxygen.
Good for Power Only.
What muscles are high in Myoglobin?
Slow-twitch muscles have a higher amount of Myoglobin whilst Fast-Twitch muscles have lower amounts of Myoglobin.
