What are the four components of growth and development?

Physical-

A

Physical: Growth of the body’s physical traits (bones, CNS etc).

Cognitive: The ability to interpret/process information and the introduction and
establishment of a person’s self-concept or self- awareness.

Social: Development of interpersonal relationships.

Emotional: The ability to control, understand and regulate ones emotions.

What are the three age types in the “Concept of Age”?

A

Chronological Age: How old you are from the day you were born.

Skeletal Age: Age indicated by the physical maturity of the [person’s] skeleton.

Developmental Age: includes the interaction between the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of the individual

What’s the RAE (Relative Age Effect)?

The school year, not a calender year

A

The R.A.E is used to describe a statistical trend to be found in the upper echelons of sport (and academia), whereby success appears to be slightly higher among those born in the early part of the year, and lower for those born late in the year

A

1) Infancy/Toddler
2) Childhood

What occurs in the Infancy/Toddler stage?

A

This stage occurs between birth to 3 years of age.

The head and chest grow rapidly, allowing the brain, heart, and lungs to develop quickly. The bones harden considerably during this time.

Noticeable muscular development also improves. Range of motion improves. Child begins to walk and stuff.

What’s the Childhood stage?

A

Ages 4-10.

In middle childhood, the body undergoes a stabilizing period that allows the child to begin to establish an important base of motor skills.

They begin to experiment with organized sports with the goal of staying active while having fun, and just building on motor skill development.

What’s the Puberty/Adolescence stage?

A

Ages 11-18

Typically occurs earlier in females.

Reproductive system comes to life allowing for the reproduction of life to occur.

Huge Psychological adjustments occur throughout this phase (courtesy of hormones from pituitary gland).

Social relationships begin which can make or break a person.

The Adulthood Stage?

A

Ages 18-sunset

Increase in BP and RHR.
Large Weight gains (either in fat deposits or in muscle).
Reduced Oxygen intake.
Weakening of stress bearing joints (Hips/Knees).

How many minutes does CPAG say humans should exercise per week?

A

Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that Adults/Geezers get at minimum 150 minutes moderate/vigorous aerobic activity per week.

Strength activities should be performed at least twice per week.
