spinal cord Flashcards
function
sensory and motor innervation for the entire body inferior to the head
-major reflex center
what is the spinal cord protected by
bone
meninges
cerebrospinal fluid
meninges
CT covering
what are the 3 types of meninges coverings
- dura mater: tough outer layer
- arachnoid matter: thin, spider web like middle layer
- pia matter: inner, layer, adheres directly to the spinal cord
epidural space
common site for injecting anesthetics to numb the spinal cord and relieve pain in regions inferioir to injection site.
-between body wall and dura mater
subdural space
a small area that can potentially fill with fluid or blood due to injury
-between dura mater and arachnoid
subarachnoid space
filled with cerebrospinal fluid, also contains blood vessels
-between arachnoid and pia
-not safe for anesthetics
cervical and lumbar enlargements
sires where nerves for the upper and lower limbs form
conus medullaris
inferior tapered end of the spinal cord
filum terminale
long filament of CT tissue, attaches to the coccyx inferioirly and anchors the spinal cord in place
cauda equina
collection of lumbar and sacral roots, 5 inch space. allow sample of CSF to be collected
where does the spinal cord terminate
into the conus medullaris
-L1 or L2
where does the dura mater end
dont end until S2. leaves 5 inches between cord and sac
