Drug classification
Corticosteroid/anti-inflammatory
Mechanism of action
Diffuses across the cell membrane of various cells present in all tissues, binds to DNA, regulates gene expression and increases synthesis of proteins and enzymes that inhibit inflammatory agents (cytokines, interleukins, interferon); inhibits synthesis of pro-inflammatory enzymes
is an immunosuppressant

Contraindications
None EMS
Side effects/ adverse reactions
Fluid retention,CHF, HTN, abdominal distension, vertigo, HA, nausea, malaise, hiccups
Dose
ADULT
Asthma/anaphylaxis: 125mg slow IV, IO
PEDI
Asthma/anaphylaxis: 2 mg/kg slow IV/IO max 125mg
Precautions
Give only one dose prehospitally, long term steroid use can cause GI bleeding, prolonged would healing, and suppression of adrenocortical steroids
Drug-drug interactions
- Lasix and thiazides diuretics increase K+ excretion
- Decreased effect with phenytoin, phenobarbital and rifampin due to increased metabolism of steroids
